“You and I” is too good of pop song for this video. Yet another misstep for Gaga when it comes to recent music videos.
Sara Bareilles - Basket Case
Sara Bareilles became one of my favorite pop acts the moment I heard “Gravity” on her debut album. Despite the relative blandness of first single, “King of Anything,” especially when compared to the first single from her debut, the mega hit “Love Song,” Bareilles seems to have the chops to avoid the sophomore slump and produce a clever followup.
The fast paced piano heavy tracks on the album are all fine, though many sound repetitive with interchangeable melodies. However, once Bareilles moves away from relying too much on piano pop numbers, the album picks up and the singer shows a maturity and versatility missing on her debut. Bareilles’ strength still lies in her ability to showcase her vulnerability in her ballads, especially “Basket Case” and “Breathe Again.” When Bareilles slows down the tempo, her voice shines through her piano prowess and you hear the emotions.
Standout tracks: “Uncharted,” “Basket Case” “Breathe Again” “Gonna Get Over You”
You can download the album here.
Katy Perry - Hummingbird Heartbeat
Despite the “Like a Virgin”-esque first line, this is one of my favorite tracks from the album.
Of Montreal ft. Solange - Sex Karma
I’ll admit, I’ve never really understood the appeal of Of Montreal. I’ve seen them live twice and enjoyed their music, but never enough to give anything a second listen.
However, this song has me incredibly excited for their album False Priest. It’s insanely catchy and I can’t go more than 20 minutes without listening to it in the last 2 days. Just a fantastic pop song from a group I never really considered very poppy.
Hurts - Wonderful Life
This song is really starting to grow on me, though I don’t love it as much as “Better Than Love.”
Robyn - Indestructible (Acoustic Version)
Robyn’s Body Talk Pt. 2 leaked today. DL here before it’s taken it down. Once again, Robyn delivers some flawless pop music, although there may be a bit too much rapping. But whatever, rapping Robyn is better than nearly every other current pop artist.
Drake - Find Your Love
Who would’ve guessed a rapper from Degrassi would come up with such a catchy pop song?
Kylie Minogue - Get Outta My Way
Still my favorite from Kylie’s latest, Aphrodite.
