This is Ellie Goulding’s new video for her latest single, “The Writer.” Although the cinematography is fine and Ellie looks great as always, there isn’t very much here as a video. Granted, the song isn’t one of the standouts from the album, but it was nice of her to change the pace and choose a mid-tempo track.
I can help but wonder if music videos, especially for artists like Ellie, are really necessary now. Of course, I have no idea if Europe has music channels, but in America, the market is completely gone. Of course, there are artists like Lady Gaga, MIA, or OK Go who truly understand the marketing potential behind music videos. But for the most part, music videos seem to be an extravagant waste of time and money. With so many ways to discover and digest music, videos are no longer one of the first sources to discover new songs. At this point, I’d rather hear a new song through performance videos than watching the artist lip sync in front of a forest or on a beach.
